I discovered an old trunk among my grandfather's possessions after he passed away in 1996. The trunk contained post cards of Europe that Helen had sent him from her travels in 1914. She visited these iconic sites just prior to the outbreak of World War I. Helen was my grandfather's first love, unrequited as he was 15 and she was 26. My grandfather first met Helen when she was a customer in his father's German Sausage and Butcher Shop in Detroit. Helen was an avid traveler, fearless and adventurous. She married the brother of a famous silent screen actor and settled in Los Angeles in 1917. Sadly, Helen contracted tuberculosis and passed away at the age of 40. My grandfather cherished her post cards until his death, almost 82 years after first receiving them. Helen was bold, brave and lived life to the fullest. Her story is intriguing because maybe there is a little bit of Helen in each of us
